My name is Kumar Kalagara, and I am running to serve the Folsom Cordova Unified School District as a member of the school board. I have a passion for service to the community, as I have demonstrated in my 18 years as a manager in private sector and civil servant for the State of California. More specifically, I am, and have always been, a strong advocate for ensuring that our children receive the best education possible. It is to help the district attain this end that I am running to serve on the school board.

My philosophy on education is straightforward. Education should be a basic, natural process that encourages students to tap into the curiosity of the human mind. As such, I believe that education should be a holistic process where students learn not only facts, but the ability to critically analyze and evaluate information. I am also a strong proponent for education in the fine arts and physical education. Working together, we can ensure that our district contributes to the well-rounded development of our students.

As I member of the school board, my priority will be to create sound fiscal policies that cut unnecessary costs while ensuring that our classrooms are never undersupplied or underfunded. Furthermore, I will try to engage parents to encourage them to play an active role in their children’s education. Finally, I will fight to provide better early health education that emphasizes the importance of nutrition, hygiene, and other health-promoting habits.

I have raised a son who is a graduate of our school district. He is now at the University of California-Berkeley. As an active parent, I had first-hand experience in interacting with my son’s fellow students and with teachers. I am also good friends with many parents who have kids at all levels of education in Folsom and Rancho Cordova. By speaking with them, I continue to have a first-hand perspective on what’s going on in schools. Moreover, I have extensively researched the relevant and contemporary issues confronting our schools, and I have compared our approaches with those of other school boards in the area. With all these experiences, I have learned of the opportunities and challenges inherent in our system of education. If elected, I will work to ensure that the former outweigh the latter in our district.

Overall, I bring the unique combination of passion for education, grassroots knowledge, and managerial and parental experience. I know how important education is, and I know how to improve the system currently in place. I urge you to give me the opportunity to carry out these improvements and to serve the district.
